A cookie is a very small text file that this site stores in your browser when you visit. It serves to remember information between one page and the next: the language you chose, whether you already dismissed a notice, or that you were halfway through an admissions form.
On their own, cookies do not run programs and cannot damage your device. Nor do they read files from your computer: they only return to the site the information the site itself stored earlier.
At ICES we use cookies with two very specific intentions: so the site works the way you expect, and so we can improve it with real data rather than guesswork.
Thanks to them we know, for example, which academic program applicants look at most, or at which step of the enquiry form people give up, so we can fix it. We never use them to identify you by name unless you gave it to us first.
By purpose, the cookies present on this site fall into these groups:
Session cookies delete themselves as soon as you close your browser; they exist only while you move through the site.
Persistent cookies are kept for a defined period —on this site, never longer than thirteen months— or until you choose to delete them manually from your browser. Once that period expires, the browser discards them automatically.
Some sections of the site embed content served by external providers, such as the institutional video or the campus location map. When they load, those providers may install their own cookies under their own privacy policies, over which the institution has no direct control.
We only embed providers that publicly declare their privacy practices, and we recommend reviewing their policies if you want the detail of what they collect.
We do not use cookies to collect sensitive personal data, nor to build profiles for purposes other than those described in this policy. Nor do we sell or exchange the information they generate with third parties.
The personal data you do provide to us voluntarily —for example when requesting information— is governed by our privacy policy, not by this one.

That said, some conveniences will stop working: you will have to dismiss notices you have already seen again, the institutional video may not play embedded, and some forms may lose what you had entered if you reload the page.
